Ellen Bernhard is an Assistant Professor of Digital Communication at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, New Jersey. Her research focuses on contemporary punk rock scenes and their relationship with social media and other influences such as popular culture and digital technology. Ellen’s current research looks at what she refers to as the Epitaph Records Musical Universe, with several working papers and conference presentations in the works that investigate the continued impact of Epitaph Records and Bad Religion on today’s punk scene. Publications include ‘“I thought it was a very punk rock thing to say”: NOFX’s (sort-of) public apology and (in)civility in defining contemporary punk rock in online spaces,’ which was published in 2020 in Punk & Post-Punk. Her book, Contemporary Punk Rock Communities: Scenes of Inclusion and Dedication was published by Lexington in 2019.
