Punk Aesthetics & Sexualities

Mansions of the Future, Lincoln, 19th October 2019

On Saturday 19th October 2019, Francis Stewart and Laura Way organised an event in Lincoln entitled Punk Aesthetics and Sexuality/ies in response to Lincoln Castle's exhibition of work by artist Jamie Reid and designer Vivienne Westwood. The PSN event wanted to draw upon some of the voices often ignored or marginalised in the re-telling of punk history as well as representations of punk and its cultural legacy. As with other events a key concern was for this event to be embedded in the local community and open to all interested.

The evening began with a presentation from Dr Rebecca Binns who spoke about her work on the artist Gee Vaucher (best known for her artistic involvements with the band Crass). Following this was a 'film short' from the Rebel Dykes forthcoming documentary about the group of lesbians in London in the 1980s "when punk met feminism". After this Francis presented a photo essay on punk women in Northern Ireland, during and after The Troubles. A discussion panel followed featuring Rebecca and Francis, Lou Viner and Shann Walsh (from the local zine community) and Emily Rose Teece of the band Kermes who closed the night with a live set.https://kermes.bandcamp.com
