Philipp Meinert

Philipp was born in Western Germany in the Ruhr area, known for its rougher punk scene. In the 1990s, he got in touch with punk by popular bands like Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte and soon dived deeper into ‘Deutschpunk’. Always more a bystander (because he refused to drink), but also interested in the active DIY-culture of punk, he sometimes organizes shows and has been a regular contributor to the Plastic Bomb fanzine since 2010. Philipp studied Social Science in Bochum.

He was never interested in the academics of punk, until a friend asked him to co-edit the anthology Punk in Deutschland. Sozial- und kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven (with Martin Seeliger, transcript Verlag, 2013). Philipp is the author of Homopunk History. Von den Sechzigern bis in die Gegenwart, a book about LGBTIQ+ in the international punk- and hardcore scenes (Ventil Verlag, 2018).

Philipp lives in Berlin and works on his PhD-thesis about right-wing tendencies in German punk.
