Pandemic Punk began as a MFA Integrated Design thesis project. It was originally proposed as a zine series and accompanying website. The first volume in the series is an account of Emma Muccioli’s (the artist's) personal experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, through the lens of punk design and DIY culture. The zine was created using both analogue and digital design processes, directly influenced by punk DIY design. The timeline of the first volume of the zine is from March 14, 2020 to March 20, 2021, the beginning of the designer’s remote work / social distancing to her second Pfizer vaccination shot. A core part of this thesis project is the process with which these pieces were created. Analogue and digital design processes were used together, to create pieces that are a blend of original punk DIY design processes, that are intertwined with digital resources and applications.
Emma Muccioli is a graphic designer, and helps to run UMBC's Design and Print Center, commonvision, where she supervises their team of Office Assistants, Production Assistants, and Graphic Designers. She is also an Adjunct professor for UMBC's Media and Communication Studies programme. Emma has her MFA in Integrated Design from the University of Baltimore.
